Our book of the month for July is Rejoice and Tremble: The Surprising Good News of the Fear of the Lord. Throughout the scriptures we read of the fear of the Lord. Israel was told to fear the Lord and walk in his commandments. We read throughout the wisdom literature that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and knowledge. The fear of the Lord is to be taught to our children. Christians know the fear of the Lord in Christ, and it is in the fear of the Lord that we obey Jesus’ commands. This is certainly a dominant theme throughout scripture. While this theme saturates the scriptures, many Christians do not grasp its far reaching implications.
In Rejoice and Tremble, Michael Reeves thoroughly unpacks the concept of the fear of the Lord and how it should change us. By expounding passages of scripture, and interacting with Christian writers and thinkers from previous generations, Reeves helps us understand exegetically and theologically what the fear of the Lord is. The book also has many practical applications and exhortations, as the fear of the Lord is not a disconnected theological concept, but like all theology, affects the way we live. Some of the most practical applications apply to our struggles with sinful fear and anxiety. Written with a warm and devotional tone, this book is accessible and helpful for all Christians, therefore we recommend it as an excellent resource for the people of Calvary.
