In Jerry Bridges’ book, The Discipline of Grace, he writes of the necessity to “preach the gospel to yourself.” This has become common vernacular for many Christians as they grow to understand that the gospel is not simply the entrance into the Christian life and the escape from judgment, but the gospel is the very source of power for us to live the Christian life. While we would readily agree that the gospel is to be at the very center of our lives, many of us struggle in applying it to daily life. This is where A Gospel Primer will be of great help.
A Gospel Primer is one man’s attempt to help us preach the gospel to ourselves every day. The first part of the book contains thirty-one meditations on why we need to preach the gospel to ourselves every day. These reasons are very practical areas in which the gospel changes my thinking and behavior. The second part of the book contains two gospel narratives, one in prose and one poetic. These narratives will help flesh out the gospel so you can meditate on it in all its depths.
This book will be of the most help as it is slowly and carefully read. It’s not written as an exposition of the gospel as much as a mediation on the gospel and its application to life. Therefore, it will be most helpful to you as you use it to daily meditate on the gospel.
