Historically, next to the Bible, no book has been read by Christians more than Pilgrim’s progress. First published in 1678, it has never been out of print. Pilgrim’s Progress is an allegory, written by an imprisoned pastor, depicting the Christian life as a journey, with many dangers, and something that is not undertaken carelessly.  As the introduction says, “What Bunyan tried to show is that the Christian life is not for the lazy or the cowardly; knowledge of scripture and doctrine and the practice of obedience and attentiveness are central in the life of a growing child of God.”
