The Puritan pastor and author, Richard Sibbes is often referred to as, “the heavenly doctor.” After reading The Bruised Reed, you will ascertain why this is a fitting title. In this little book, Sibbes focuses on Matthew 12:20 and how Jesus is the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy, “a bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not quench.” This statement about our Savior and how he deals with us is of great encouragement, and Sibbes shows us that. If you have never read the Puritans before, this is a good introduction to their style of writing and thinking. Like all Puritan writers, the reader will benefit the most by slowly reading through this book.
